What is Schumacher Quartier?
In Berlin many people live.
And there are not enough homes for everyone.
That is why a new urban quarter is being built.
Where many people can live.
The new urban quarter is called: Schumacher Quartier.
This is pronounced: Shoo-mah-kher Kwar-teer.
It is being built on the site of the old Tegel Airport.
More than 5 thousand homes are being built there.
Where more than 10 thousand people can live.
The following will also be built:
- Schools
- Kindergartens
- Sports fields
- Shops
And there will be many trees and plants.
This is important so that people have a nice home.
And feel comfortable.
The people in Berlin and the builders have decided on 7 important things.
These 7 things in Schumacher Quartier are:
- People should not only live there.
They should also have everything they need for life.
That is why kindergartens, schools and shops are also being built.
- Everyone is warmly welcome and can live here.
- There will be many parks and nature areas .
- Everyone should be able to go to school and learn.
- There should be water and heat saved there. That protects the environment.
- Only vehicles that do not harm nature may drive there.
- It will be explained clearly what is being done.
Everyone can take part and say what worries them and what they want.
What will Schumacher Quartier look like later?
There will be many new homes built there.
So that more people in Berlin have a nice home.
There will be shops, schools, sports fields and kindergartens.
Many homes will be built by the federal state of Berlin.
These homes will cost less rent.
So that people with little money can also live there.
For children there will be 2 schools and 6 day-care centres.
What is special about Schumacher Quartier?
They want to show there: How to build and protect nature at the same time.
Schumacher Quartier is therefore a model for other cities
and urban planners.
The builders of Schumacher Quartier make sure:
- That there are enough green spaces .
- And that the rainwater can drain away well.
So that there are no floods.
The builders save energy:
Because the houses use little energy.
And only energy that is good for the environment is used.
Heat energy can be bought and sold on the internet.
And on the internet there is also information about the new urban quarter collected. The website is called: FUTR HUB.
There is information there:
- about traffic
- about the weather
- and about how much energy is needed where in the city.
With this information it is easier to decide:
What needs to be done to make the city better.
For example, one can make sure:
- That there is always water for all parks .
- Or that the city uses less energy .
In Schumacher Quartier, almost no cars should drive.
There will be many streets and paths for bicycles and pedestrians.
And there will be places where people can rent cars and bicycles.
By bus you can travel to Schumacher Quartier.
And travel away again.
The wild animals should also feel comfortable there.
For example: insects, birds, frogs, bats, squirrels and hedgehogs.
They will have enough space and hiding places here.
Care will also be taken:
that they always have enough to eat.
The technical term for this is: Animal Aided Design.
This is English and is pronounced: An-i-mal Ay-ded De-sign.
It means: urban planning that supports animals.
Location
Schumacher Quartier is located in the north-west of Berlin.
In the district of Reinickendorf, in the locality of Tegel.
It is being built on the site of the old Tegel Airport.
Nearby are Lake Tegel and lots of nature.
This is nice for walking and relaxing.
By underground train you can reach the city centre in 20 to 25 minutes.
The nearest underground stations are called: Scharnweberstraße and Kurt-Schumacher-Platz.
Both are on underground line U6.
There are also new bus routes directly to Schumacher Quartier.
How to get a home
Would you like to live in Schumacher Quartier?
The first homes are expected to be ready from 2029.
The homes will be rented out by degewo and GESOBAU.
Both companies belong to the federal state of Berlin.
You can apply directly to degewo or GESOBAU.
This can be done through their normal channels and websites.
Half of the homes will be rented out at low cost.
So that people with little money can also live there.
Rental costs
How much the homes cost is decided by degewo and GESOBAU.
Both are bound by the requirements of the State of Berlin.
The State of Berlin makes sure that rents remain affordable.
Later, housing cooperatives will also rent out homes.
You will then find all current information here on this website.
Who can build in Schumacher Quartier?
In Schumacher Quartier, groups of people can also build together.
This is called: building group.
For example: A group of neighbours builds a house together.
The plots are not sold to the person who pays the most.
Instead, they are sold to groups that want to shape the quarter well for everyone.
For example: cooperatives or building groups.
It is not yet clear exactly when this will be possible.
We will inform you as soon as there is new information
